Rocky Mountain Junior Kayak League
Our Junior Kayak Program and League is a great way for kids and teens to get involved in kayaking. It provides a fun after-school and summer activity that promotes friendship, fitness, outdoor education, leadership, and just enjoying the river.
The goal of our youth program is to develop young paddlers into safe and confident kayakers. All aspects of kayaking are taught in the youth program including paddling skills, safety and rescue skills, on-river communication, leadership and organization, teamwork, fitness, logistics, and of course FUN.
Team members can compete in the Colorado Kayak Rodeo series as well as downriver and slalom races. Downstream Edge teams throughout Colorado will compete against each other in several friendly competitions each season. We will have competitions for paddlers of all abilities. The purpose of these events is to get to know members of other teams and to provide a fun competitive atmosphere. All members are not required to compete.
The Downstream Edge youth coaching program and League runs throughout the kayak season. We practice twice a week from May through August. All skill levels are welcome. We will divide groups based on skills, age, fitness, paddling goals, and schedule. An optional winter program will meet at a local indoor swimming pools and continue practice of rolling, paddling skills, and flatwater freestyle skills. We will not meet during the months of November, December, and January due to the holidays.
Parents are encouraged to be involved in logistics. This will include dropping kids off and picking them up, helping with driving shuttles when necessary, and transporting kids to competitions for Level 5 groups. We encourage parents to share in the driving responsibilities. For Levels 4 and below, driving will all be local.
Rocky Mountain Junior Kayak League Scholarship Program
We understand that the cost of our program may not be affordable for some families. We believe that programs like this should be available to everyone, so the Rocky Mountain Junior Kayak League offers scholarships to help offset the cost. Anyone can apply for these scholarships, and they are limited to one scholarship per athlete. The scholarships are paid for by individual league coaches, so we do not give them to just anyone. To receive a scholarship, you must fulfill certain responsibilities that benefit the Junior Kayaking League. Below are a list of the available scholarships and the responsibilities that accompany each one. Not only does the scholarship program help families to save money, it also teaches the students responsibility, management, teamwork, and other skills such as photography and computer skills.
